Lama blankets: optimal protection against the cold with heirloom potential
A llama blanket is the perfect choice when it gets really cold. It is super soft and extremely warm, yet very robust, temperature-regulating and hypoallergenic. Thanks to its durability, a high-quality llama wool blanket will last for many decades and has the potential to become an heirloom.
The llama is about twice the size of an alpaca, but has significantly less wool. The under fleece is just as soft, but shorter than that of the alpacas and stronger in structure. Alpacas are sheared once a year, but Classic Llamas are sheared only every 2-3 years because the fibers take much longer to grow. That is why llama wool is also particularly exclusive and a llama blanket is something very special.
Our llama blankets are woven by indigenous communities in a cooperative in the high altitude, desert and rugged landscape of northwestern Argentina. The people here have a deep connection to Pachamama, the "Mother Earth". All blankets are made from sustainable wool and have the natural color variations of the llamas. The elaborate selection of the color tone is done manually and makes this product an exclusive favorite that will bring you a lifetime of joy. We purchase our llama blankets directly from the cooperative at a fair price.
Alpaca blankets: light and wonderfully warm at the same time
Alpaca wool comes from the Andes, a high mountain range with extreme temperature variations. It is also known as the "wool of the gods". And indeed, this super-soft and remarkably lightweight material is so luxurious that it was once reserved only for the Inca kings.
Alpaca fibers are one of the noblest natural hair, which can be used to make blankets and plaids. However, despite the fineness of this natural material, the wool is much warmer than conventional virgin wool from sheep, because unlike virgin wool, alpaca hair is hollow inside and can store more temperature-insulating air. Compared to other blankets, due to the very low content of lanolin (wool fat), many allergy sufferers and people with sensitive skin will tolerate you perfectly.
If you like it particularly fine and soft against the skin, choose a luxurious blanket made of baby Alpaka hair. The wool, unlike the name suggests, also comes from adult alpacas. However, the Baby alpaca hair a layer of wool hidden under the "outer" wool of the alpaca and is so called when the fiber fineness is between 14 and 23 microns. To give you an idea of how incredibly fine this is, a (human) hair measures about 60 to 80 microns.
Our high-quality blankets made from the finest baby alpaca are hand-woven by master weavers in small mountain villages in the Peruvian Andes. Our local partner is a multi-award winning social entrepreneur with decades of experience in weaving.
Merino wool blankets: strong properties and soft core
Merino wool is the wool of the merino sheep. It is much softer than classic virgin wool, does not scratch and is therefore very pleasant on the skin even for sensitive people.
Merino sheep are one of the oldest and hardiest breeds of sheep in the world and are true survivors, easily withstanding extreme temperature differences between day and night, summer and winter. Thanks to the temperature-balancing properties of their wool, they are optimally protected - and these advantages are also noticeable in Merino textiles. In winter, a merino wool blanket keeps out the cold because it can store a lot of body heat in its fibers. In summer, it can absorb a lot of moisture, which it then releases back into the environment, which has a pleasantly cooling effect.
Our Merino wool blankets consist of the softest 100% organic merino wool from Patagonia and become hand-woven fairly and socially by a small group of weavers in Buenos Aires. With its ornate, long fringes and coarse, textured weave, each blanket is unique and takes five days to complete.
